How to Apply

Important Dates:

Application deadline for graduate student fellowships:
December 30, 2010

Nomination deadline for faculty fellowships:
January 30, 2011

Eligibility:

Collegium fellowships are available annually. Faculty fellowships are reserved for faculty from Collegium's member institutions, while graduate fellowships are open to advanced doctoral students interested in academic careers. Collegium's sponsoring colleges and universities open the program to graduate fellows as a means to identify potential faculty interested in the spiritual and intellectual missions of their institutions.

The program welcomes interested participants from all religious denominations. Its general focus is on the multiple traditions that comprise "the Catholic imagination." Some mentors are faculty from other denominations who have chosen to live out an academic vocation in a Catholic environment, while others are Catholic scholars who have pursued teaching in a secular setting. Catholic institutions thrive when they are able to share with and learn from people of all faiths.

Fellowships cover all normal travel expenses, lodging, meals, and seminar-related costs.

Faculty from member institutions are nominated by their home college or university to attend the summer institute. Contact the Collegium office for the name of your campus liaison. Graduate fellowships are open to doctoral students and post-doctoral researchers not yet in tenure-track positions.

Because the Collegium summer colloquy depends in significant part on the mutual commitment of participants to a process that lasts throughout the week, all participants should be able to commit to participation during the whole colloquy.

Application Procedures

  • the completed application form (download the pdf application or contact our office for a copy);
  • a curriculum vitae;
  • official transcript(s) of all graduate-level work;
  • a personal essay, up to 750 words, in which you discuss your reasons for applying to Collegium. Include in your essay your most significant hopes and/or questions about the relationship between your academic career and spiritual life;
  • a letter of recommendation from a mentor or thesis advisor commenting on your potential as a researcher and/ or teacher; and
  • a letter of personal support from a chaplain, Collegium alumna/us, or other knowledgeable person commenting on your commitment to spiritual life and intellectual development, as well as some indication of how Collegium might be helpful to you.

Applications are reviewed by a board of Collegium alumni/ae and the program director. Invitations to successful graduate fellowship recipients are extended by February 28, 2011.

Faculty Fellowships
Faculty fellows are nominated by a designated liaison at each member institution. Completed faculty fellowship nominations must be mailed by the institutional liaisons no later than January 30, 2011. Applications must include:

  • the completed application form (available from the member institution liaison or as a downloadable pdf);
  • a curriculum vitae;
  • a personal essay, up to 750 words, in which you discuss your reasons for applying to Collegium. Include in your essay your most significant hopes and/or questions about the relationship between your academic career and spiritual life. The primary purpose of the essay is not to determine acceptance into the program, but rather to give us a prior sense of what issues are most important to fellows.
